Upward Bound

Upward Bound, with its extensive support system, provides eligible participants with an opportunity to plan and work towards college enrollment as a realistic and attainable goal.  Fordham University Upward Bound is a direct response to the existing academic and social challenges in the New York City high schools and their surrounding communities.  Through its innovative approach to learning, the Upward Bound Program serves as a primary vehicle for students to achieve grade-level proficiency necessary to complete high school, secure admission to post-secondary education programs and successfully earn a post- secondary degree.

The Fordham University Upward Bound Program has designed a rigorous academic year component as a special reinforcement tool to assist participants in successfully completing high school and Program course work. The component consists of weekly tutoring, counseling and advisement as well as college preparatory workshops (college admission and financial aid, test taking skills, study skills, etc.), recreational and cultural events, field trips, and other educational activities.

S.E.O Scholars

Offer intensive year-round academic preparation via a carefully-calibrated, rigorously-assessed course of supplemental education. Our Saturday, summer, and weekly after-school classes provide the equivalent of 2.5+ years of instruction in English and 1.5+ years of instruction in math.

Lehman College Now

College Now is a collaborative program between the City University of New York (CUNY) and the New York City Department of Education (DOE). It is a FREE transition program for qualified NYC public high school students.

Through College Now, qualified students get an early introduction to the college environment and a jump start on college coursework by taking credit-bearing college-level courses. This experience helps students build the academic skills that are necessary to be successful in college.

Epic Theater

With our In-school programs in our full partner schools (Bronx HS for Writing and Communication Arts, Chelsea CTE HS and Urban Assembly School for Performing Arts), we reach every student in every grade, every year. Adding the students we reach in other schools through individualized programs, we reach 2,000 each year. From those 2,000, approximately 200 become involved in the company on a deeper level through our nationally recognized Shakespeare Remix program. From this, 30 are chosen to join Epic NEXT. Through specifically-personalized pairings between artist-mentors and developing young artists, Epic NEXT utilizes a comprehensive, individualized approach to artistic and youth development, creating artistic leaders, thinkers, and actors for the future.

Young Men Initiative

We are proud to announce the Young Men of Color Initiative (YMI) at Bronx High for Writing & Communication Arts. This program in partner with EPIC Theater Ensemble allows BSHWCA to work closely with a group of 10th grade males in order to create a documentary on minority excellence in our community.

And much more….

Thank you for your help and support. I know it will be a fun and successful year for the students. I look forward to meeting you all.

Best regards,

Mrs. Rodriguez

Parent Coordinator

Welcome to an amazing four years!

October 2015

This year we will embrace the new changes that come with meeting the common core learning standards and ensure that all of our students are college ready. We will be challenged to build upon our strengths. It means that we must work as a team. Everyone must raise their level of involvement. Students should wear their uniform, arrive on time, engage in class and pass all of their classes. They should also participate in after school clubs, Saturday tutoring and join our school academic and sports teams and other extra-curricular activities. Parents and guardians we need you to listen to our weekly voice messages, attend school events, including parent and teacher conferences and join the Parent Association or the School Leadership Team.

I look forward to a collaborative, productive and successful school year with you all.  I look forward to working with you all to achieve our school’s vision, which is to create a community of life-long learners, readers and writers who use the written word as our vehicle to explore our world and discover their potential.
